Position Summary
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and overall management of the Infection Prevention and Control Program within the community. This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations while promoting resident safety, staff education, and positive clinical outcomes.
The ideal candidate is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) with strong knowledge of infection prevention practices, microbiology, and epidemiology.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate, develop, implement, manage, and evaluate the Infection Prevention and Control Program in accordance with CDC, CMS, Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), and other applicable guidelines
- Oversee the Antibiotic Stewardship Program, including monitoring antibiotic usage and resistance trends
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention regulations and best practices
- Conduct ongoing infection surveillance, investigations, and required reporting
- Analyze clinical and laboratory data to identify trends, risks, and potential outbreaks
- Develop and implement corrective action plans related to infection control concerns
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention policies and procedures across all departments
- Educate and train staff on infection prevention standards and ensure ongoing competency

- Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) overview
- Infection surveillance and outbreak management
- Standard and transmission-based precautions
- Wound care and resident care practices
- Water management protocols
- Linen handling and processing
- Prevention of respiratory infections
- Tuberculosis (TB) prevention
- Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI)
- Care transitions
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in the Quality Assessment and Assurance (QAA) Committee
- Prepare and present routine and as-needed reports on infection prevention activities and outcomes
- Collaborate with leadership, clinical staff, and external agencies
- Assist with survey readiness and regulatory compliance related to infection prevention
- Serve as a resource for staff regarding infection prevention practices and concerns
Qualifications
- Current, active Tennessee LPN or RN license in good standing
- Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a long-term care setting
- Skilled nursing experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of infection prevention and control, microbiology, and epidemiology
- Ability to interpret clinical and laboratory data
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to educate, train, and influence staff at all levels
- Proficiency with electronic health records and basic computer applications
- Experience working with geriatric populations strongly preferred
